History
1 September 1900, a significant event that left its mark in the history of medical education in Ukraine and for many years identified her perspective, was the opening of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Novorossiysk.
Faculty had bright prospects because great world-renowned scientists worked in it. Before the opening of the department was completed, major buildings and clinics were constructed with the latest construction and architecture. Admittedly this was the most prestigious faculty and medical establishment of the time.
However, this good start was suspended because of Russia’s war with Japan, the revolutionary events of 1905-1907 years, the First World War 1914-1918 years, the October Revolution of 1917 and the civil war. After the elapse time and the destruction of the old system of higher education, new foundations began to be making its ascent. The positive things that were founded in the pre-revolutionary times soon began to bear fruit.
1922 Medical Faculty University of Novorossiysk was reformed as an independent institution of higher education – Medical Institute, which again turned into a leading university of the south.
In the 20 years of the previous century, basic schools were actively formed which brought the Odessa medical institute worldwide fame. Of this, the Odessa therapeutic school based students SPBotkin – professors S.V.Levashovym, P.O.Valterom and their successors were L.P.Dmytrenko, MD Strazhesko, F.H Yanovski, NA.Yasinovka. One of the founders of the Odessa Ophthalmic School was professor S.S.Holovin. Continuing its development and worldwide fame associated with the name of academician V.P.Filatova.
Even in pre-revolutionary times emerging world-renowned school of pathologists, whose founder was the first dean of the Medical Faculty V.V.Pidvysotskyy. His closest aides and students were OO Bogomolets and Zabolotny, who later headed the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. At the same time formed a large scientific school scholar –V.V.Voronina pathologist. In his ideas formed the future prominent scientists V.P.Filatov, L.P.Dmytrenko, SI Vinokurov, L.O.Cherkes, M.O.Yasynovskyy, V.K.Zhhenti et al. Not to mention known morphologists – professors M.K.Lysonkova, M.S.Kondrat Prokofiev, F.A.Volynskoho, V.I.Bushkovycha et al. Their original work has received recognition worldwide.
Over the years of independent Ukraine, our university has developed into one of the leading medical universities with the IV level of accreditation. It is a member of the International and European Universities Association. The level of student learning and training is closest to international standards. Pre-Professional Programmes - Lipscomb University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA

A growing number of students are looking for Professional Courses that will enhance their employability in specific disciples after graduation. It is in light of this that Lipscomb University runs its 4 Years Bachelors Pre-Professional courses to adequately prepare students to progress into their careers. Subjects include:
·   Pre - Dental
·   Pre - Medicine
·   Pre - Nursing
·   Pre - Pharmacy
·   Pre - Vet

Pre-medical Studies
For more than five decades, Lipscomb has been among the top schools for premedical preparation in the region. But that really should not be surprising in view of the fact that our programs' founding principles - compassion, intelligence, maturity, judgment and commitment to people - are those of the Great Physician and are the very qualities so necessary for a successful career in health care.
Our pre-med students go on to the outstanding schools of their choice
The majority of Lipscomb's pre-med graduates - the largest segment of our graduates in the sciences and pre-health sciences - have gone on to outstanding schools of their choosing.  While here, they have been mentored by a council of well-informed professionals who have guided their education and preparation.  Those of us who work in this area walk with students to be sure they are heading in the direction they want - and are prepared when they get there.

Pre-Professional Course Requirements

Course requirements may vary from one health professional program to another. Below is a list of courses most commonly required by most medical and dental schools:
  • General Biology  - 8 semester hours with labs
  • General Chemistry – 8 semester hours with labs
  • Organic Chemistry – 8 semester hours with labs
  • Physics – 4-6 semester hours with lab(s)
  • Math – most programs require up through Calculus I
  • English – 6 semester hours
The Health Professions Advising Office is always available to assist students in determining the courses needed to satisfy professional school course requirements. We also encourage students to view the website(s) for the professional programs they are interested in attending to locate the specific additional courses and any additional requirements of the program.

Getting into a professional school.

Professional schools rarely prescribe a particular undergraduate major, so you should select one that best suits your personal interests. However, while satisfying Lipscomb’s graduation requirements, you will also need to plan your class schedules so they include the courses that are required by the professional school of your choice.
Once you have decided upon the area of health care you want to pursue, you must position yourself to be admitted to an appropriate professional school.  What must you do to be accepted into a professional school?
  • Learn which courses are prerequisites for admission to the professional schools of your choice. The Health Professions Advisory Office has lists of required courses for many area schools. Program requirements can also be found on institutional websites or by contacting schools directly.
  • Study and do well in your courses—learn the material rather than just memorizing for exam performances. This will also help you prepare for professional school admissions tests.
  • Get to know your professors well. Go to their offices, introduce yourself, tell them what your interests are and why. When you apply for professional school, you will need recommendations from some of your professors. And they need to know enough about you to write a letter that accurately portrays you as a student and potential health care professional.
  • Observe, volunteer, and/or work in your chosen area. Professional schools expect you to have a reasonable knowledge of what is expected of those who serve in a particular profession. There are several ways to obtain this experience. One way is to contact your personal physician, dentist, pharmacist, or other health care professionals and ask them if you can work or volunteer in their offices. If this is not possible, they may allow you to observe or shadow them at work for a week or so. Area hospitals all have offices where you can apply for volunteer work.
  • Involve yourself in activities other than academics and studying. Social, athletic, and service activities can all be valuable experiences. Lipscomb offers many opportunities to participate in social clubs, intramural sports, service projects, theater, international studies abroad, multicultural activities, student government, and so on. A student who is capable of maintaining a good grade point average while being actively involved outside the classroom is a student who will be able to handle the rigors of a professional school program.
  • Be a servant. Professional schools do not want to see your application state that you want “to help people” but then see no evidence to support that statement. Become involved in your community through volunteering in programs such as blood drives, health screenings, Special Olympics, neighborhood clean-ups, etc.
  • Keep your personal record clean. Obey rules and laws. Professional schools demand high ethical standards and most now perform background checks on applicants.

Helping you get on track with the right major.

At Lipscomb, premedical studies encompasses much more than just medicine. Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physician assistant, physical therapy, optometry or some other health care field, Lipscomb's Health Professions Advisory Office is the perfect place to begin. Located in Ward Hall, Room 327/330, the office is "home base" for all students interested in pursuing a premedical or pre-health care college track.
We understand, too, you have a lot of questions. That's why our Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) members, comprised of knowledgeable and well-respected professionals and educators in their fields, are on-hand to assist you with every step of planning. Even if you're not sure at first of your plans, the committee is available to discuss ideas and goals, and help you select a major that best reflects who you are and who you want to be.
During the year of your application to professional school, members of this committee will interview you in order to prepare a letter of recommendation. So, it is helpful for us to begin getting acquainted with you as soon as possible. Please register with our office (HPAO) early in your first semester.

Exchange Programs:
As a trusted educational community, we are committed to helping students overcome the financial and academic barriers to
study abroad. In partnership with our member institutions, we’re able to send and receive students to and from our partner
universities around the world to be connected to high-quality, academic programs.
As a registered student of the Tbilisi Open University, students have the right to expect that a period of study with an exchange
partner is of equivalent level, standard and quality as they could expect if taking that period of study here. A number of safeguards
are necessary to ensure the overall quality of the student experience abroad as well as the level and amount of credit.
A student exchange program offers students the opportunity of spending their second or third year at another University allowing
them to broaden their horizons and experience a different academic environment.
Tbilisi Open University uses its teaching and research activities to participate in international networks, in order to strengthen
its role as a creative hub in the international knowledge and innovation web. Thanks to its wide international institutional collaboration
with preferred partners both regionally and beyond, Tbilisi Open University is able both to attract foreign students,
researchers and professors and to offer its own students and scholars a foreign experience.

Student Life :
Student Self-Governance
From their first day at the TOU, students become part of a strong residential
community based on student self-governance, an experience that builds
knowledge, character, and independence.
Self-governance means that students have significant freedom to develop their
talents and make decisions that matter to University life. With that freedom
come high expectations of responsibility. Students are expected to hold themselves
and their peers to high standards inside and outside the classroom, and
to engage ethically in their local, national, and international communities.
Preparing students for global citizenship relies on the high expectations and
levels of responsibility that come from student self-governance, a combination
that makes the TOU undergraduate experience unique. Within the framework
of student self-governance, students have the latitude to be creative, assume
ownership, develop leadership, take risks, and learn from their mistakes. At the
same time, the University provides support and guidance.
Student Clubs
We create opportunities for TOU students to make the most of their student life, providing the people, places and programs
that support their growth, wellness and success both within and outside of the classroom – at TOU and in the world beyond.
As a student you can choose to join one of the Student Clubs or events organized by the university or come up with your
own idea on a new one and deliver it to the students self-governance for consideration.
• Literature Club
TOU Literature Club provides opportunities for students to share their writing, discuss books and literary works, and attend
various events related to literature and creative writing. The club hosts several events each semester led by a panel of experts,
writers and students.
Our mission is to create a fun, inclusive, and stimulating atmosphere, where TOU students of all majors share their love of
literature, and improve their own reading and writing at literary readings, conferences, discussion and conversation that cross
disciplines and reach out to the global community.
• Discussions Club
TOU Discussion club gives an opportunity to students to master their speech and ability to present in front of big audience.
During the club gathering a selected group of students act as a panel, and the remaining club members act as the audience.
The panel informally discusses selected questions. A panel leader is chosen and he/she summarizes the panel discussion
and opens discussion to the audience.
• Sports Club
Joining a sports club at TOU gives an opportunity to train, compete and socialize with other club members. The TOU Sports
Club is open to all TOU students and currently has Basketball, Football and Volleyball teams that compete at local, regional
and national levels.
